WE WANT TO BE

ON YOUR WALL!

PURPOSE: The purpose of ON YOUR WALL is to photograph BIPOC+ queerness in the 20th century, especially lesbians of color, and how we experience the world through the relationship with our environment and others. ON YOUR WALL aims to highlight the culture of queerness through numerous cities on the East Coast, allowing for conversation on how queerness looks like in their respective states.

WHY A CALENDAR? One of my first experiences with understanding my queerness was when I was in my primo’s room and saw his calendar of “Hot Women” next to his computer. I was initially in awe. As I grew up, I realized that these types of calendars are usually catered to the male gaze and focus on the objectification of women, resulting in fetishism and the dehumanization of the people involved. As overused as this sounds, I want to “queer” the idea of this type of calendar, as has been done by many creative lesbians and queers in the past. A fun resource I always recommend is the magazine “ON OUR BACKS”, which has served as a huge inspiration for the creation of this magazine. (Entertainment for the Adventurous Lesbian | CUNTemporary). I know I am going all over the place, but I just love the concept of a calendar, as it is what people use to jot down important dates and things to remember surrounding our loved ones, such as anniversaries and birthdays. Having a queer calendar that centers Brown and Black lesbians and queer folk is a beautiful thing to me, something I would love to share with my community (who would be participating!). Representation in art and making art with socio-political purpose is intentional and important to my process as an artist and with those I choose to interact with. I have realized this has turned into a ramble and no longer answers the question of why a calendar, but I love time and days and the passage of our lives being documented and archived.
